Lesson

Abram/Abraham is mentioned over 200 times in the bible

Jacob (Israel) is mentioned over 1000+ times

We spoke about Jacob meaning "heal grabber", "trickster", or "deceiver"

Israel means "wrestles with God"

Got Questions discusses this "wrestling with God" here

Discussion Question based on Gen 32: 22-26

How is this story of Jacob wrestling with God not merely

about himself but about us in our relationship to God?

Where in your life are you striving for "self-preservation" instead of

complete obedience & surrender to God's call?

Below is the lineage - 12 Sons (Tribes) of Jacob (Israel).

We spoke about the entire chapter of Genesis being about deception -> redemption

Jacob's story begins in Chpt 25 but goes until his death at Chpt 50.

The Bible Project explains more about how this is indicative of his parents behavior:

His mother Rebekah deceived his father, Isaac, in having him blessed as the 1st born

His grandmother, Sarai, deceived God by having Abram sleep with the maid servant

And Adam & Eve were deceptive with the snake in the Garden of Eden.

Jacob was also deceived by Laban, the father of love, Rachel, and her sister, Leah.

Afterwards, he received the vision (Jacob's Ladder) and made a convenant with God at

Bethel.

If you notice Bethel means -

and it is the name of many Christian churches and groups.

Below you will see the Wailing Wall which is part of the Western Wall

I love Steven Furtick.

I've watched his sermons for years, attended his church service, and have read all of his books.

He is a masterful storyteller and his messages are profound.

This one references the Woman At the Well (hence my song choice) as well as explains

more about the story of Jacob.

I hope you enjoy it ;)
